This past week has been very eventful! I won’t be able to take any updated photos of our puppies for a week or so due to these events. I hope you understand after you read.
About 2 weeks ago, I noticed my vision was getting blurry in my left eye. It developed into a blind spot, which kept getting worse over time. I was able to make an appointment with my Optometrist on Monday. They did some field vision tests on me, and the results were so bad on my left eye that they thought the machine had messed up and redid the test. They were uneasy when it came out the same. I definitely had a blind spot, covering more than 1/4 of my vision in my eye. From there, I was sent to another Optometrist to redo the test and get a better idea of what was wrong. After about an hour, I was told that I had a detached retina, and if I left it untreated it would cause permanent blindness in my left eye. They told me I would need surgery, but they weren’t sure if I could have the surgery because I am 7 months pregnant. They also said waiting 2 months wasn’t an option if I wanted to keep my vision. They called and made an appointment to send me to a specialist in Pittsburgh that evening.
My fiance & I went to Pittsburgh to do more tests. I was finally able to speak with a surgeon. She called my OBGYN and consulted with him, and scheduled my surgery for the next morning to re-attach my retina. Brendan & I came home and packed for the hospital and were up at 3:00 Wednesday to make it to my appointment at 9:00. I was told to be there 3 hours early so that I could be prepped for the surgery.
When the nurse took me back to get ready, the anesthesiologist was there to talk with me. She said that they could either put me out for the surgery , or keep me awake for it. She also said that it would be much better for Logan (my baby) if I was able to stay awake for it. This would mean holding perfectly still for 2 hours while surgery was performed on my eye. I decided to do what was best for Logan, and stay awake, which was what she advised as well.
My surgeon arrived a few minutes later and we were ready to get started. I was taken back to the operating room. Keep in mind, I chose to be fully awake for this operation. They injected my eye with some numbing medicine. A small incision was made in my eye in order to get a tube down in to the retina. From this tube, a gas bubble was injected into my eye to freeze the retina and push it back into place. A rubber band was placed around my eye as well, which I am told will be staying there for the rest of my life. Four stitches were needed to close my eyeball up.
About an hour into the surgery, I started panicking, because the numbing medicine wasn’t working. Not sure if maybe I’m just immune to the type they used, but I could feel every cut, stitch, and needle jab. I was panicking because I wasn’t sure I could stand another hour of this. The anesthesiologist managed to calm me down after a few minutes so they could proceed with the surgery, and I just had to suck it up and wait for the pain to end. I ended up having a conversation with her for the whole 2 hours in order to avoid focusing on what was going on. When I focused, it was possible to see the needles, microscopes and other instruments they were using on my eye, and that was not something that I wanted to do. Ha.
After they finished stitching my eyeball up, they put a gauze patch over it and took me to recovery, where I stayed while they gave my fiance instructions on how to take care of me. From there, we went and checked into our hotel room and I stayed in bed for the day. When I needed to get up, he had to lead me around. Thursday morning I had to go back to get the patch removed and instructions on when to take my medicated eye drops, then we came home.
I have an appointment this coming Friday to have it checked again. For now I’ve just been told to rest so that I can heal.
